The production of oca young plants for retailers

Kräftige Oca-Pflanze im 1,3 L TopfIn previous articles we have already described our new tuberous vegetable oca (Oxalis tuberosa) in more detail and also presented our assortment of oca young plants as well as described how our assortment will develop in the future. In this article we would now like to introduce you to our oca young plant quality and show you how you can produce a saleable/tradable plant from this oca young plant.

The Lubera Edibles oca young plants

Our oca young plants also come from micropropagation and are delivered as standard in trays with 60-cells as multi-quality (annual). Here, micropropagation has the advantage that we can offer very vigorous oca young plants in uniform quality in a relatively short production time. Even after potting, our oca young plants do not lose any of their vitality. As a result, you as our young plant customer can place a potted plant ready for sale on the market after a maximum of six weeks. Also during the 'proof-of-concept' already carried out at our sister company and the associated direct plant sales to the end consumer via the online shop 'lubera.com', there were consistently positive reactions regarding the quality of the oca young plants as well as the further cultivation by the hobby gardener.

The production of oca plants from our young plants

Due to the seasonal nature of vegetable plants, we can only offer our oca young plants as annual herbaceous plants in early spring, and only in a relatively short period of time.

Here we have presented a short and schematic cultivation process, how you can ideally cultivate a saleable oca plant from our oca young plants in a short time.

  • Young plant quality: 60-cell tray in multi-quality (annual)
  • Delivery time: week 14 – week 16
  • Suitable pot size: 9 cm – 17cm pot
  • Substrate: normal potting substrate in a slightly acidic range (pH value between 5.5 - 6.5)
  • Location: tempered glass or plastic covered greenhouse
  • Cultivation period: 4 – 8 weeks (depending on the pot size and temperature)
  • Time of sale: from mid-May (after the last late frosts)
