Gold Medal for our variety introduction Passiflora Cooltropics® Snowstar®

The ‘Innovert Competition’ is held in France every year. This is where companies present their best new variety introductions in horticulture. Together with our French partner, Travers Nurseries, we submitted the white-flowering passionflower Cooltropics® Snowstar® this year. The variety comes from our own breeding programme for hardy passion fruit and was launched on the market this year.

Passiflora Cooltropics® Snowstar®, winterharte Passionsblume, weißblühende Passionsfrucht, Gewinner Innovert Wettbewerb

We were delighted when the winners were announced and Snowstar® stood at the top of the podium and won the coveted gold medal.

The jury's reasoning for this was:

‘The Cooltropics® - Passionfruit plants are fabulous new fruit climbers that are ideal for combining the beautiful with the tasty! The flowering period from June to October impresses with the size of the flowers and the delicate fragrance! The fruits are green, the size of an egg and are harvested from September to November when they turn yellow. Their excellent flavour is typical of passion fruit, aromatic and deliciously tart. The range currently includes 2 varieties: Eia Poppeia (with purple flowers) and the latest addition: Snowstar® with its large, immaculate white flowers. Cooltropics® passionflowers are very robust: they can withstand both the intense heat in summer and the heavy frost in winter down to -20°C! The shoots die back in winter and grow out of the ground again each spring.’

After training as a gardener and working in various companies in Germany and France, he went back to school in his late 20s and studied horticulture in Geisenheim. Now he works for Lubera on breeding new crops.
