At Lubera Edibles, our Allium young plants are standardly available in our 60-cell trays. With the introduction of this new group of young plants, we will initially offer both Allium young plants in the 'Multi+' quality (biennial/overwintered) and in the 'Multi' quality (annual) in order to be able to meet the demand. For an early and less temperature controlled potting, the Allium young plants of the quality 'Multi+' are suitable as usual because they are not so sensitive to temperature due to a cold overwintering in early spring. For a later potting with the sales target in late spring or summer, our Allium young plants of the 'Multi' quality are again suitable. These are particularly vigorous upon delivery and continue to grow quickly and immediately after potting. These young plants can also be used for production for particularly late sales dates, e.g. after the summer holidays.
What to consider when producing and scheduling perennial vegetables?
It is true that most vegetable crops are subject to strong seasonality, with annual vegetables in particular becoming quickly over-grown in the spring. However, this applies only to a limited extent to the Allium young plant assortment offered by us.
In principle, it makes sense to offer a complete vegetable assortment in the spring, consisting of annual tuber vegetables, lettuces, annual fruit vegetables and, in parallel, different varieties and species from the EverVeg® range. In short, the EverVeg® assortment should of course also be offered during the classic vegetable season (mid-April to the end of May). Here the frequency, in general the demand for vegetables, is the highest.
However, products produced from our Allium young plants become overdue much less quickly than, for example, annual vegetables. They can also be sold in June and July without any problems and at most, a production time frame for the post-holiday period is to be considered – by choosing a late potting date or by cutting back the plants in 0.5 – 2 L pots again in July.
