In addition to fruit and berries, we are expanding our vegetable range to become the third pillar of the Lubera Edibles young plant programme. This step is only logical: if our love for young plants literally goes through the stomach, then vegetables are naturally part of that. In addition, interest in growing your own high-quality vegetables in the garden or on the balcony is growing steadily – and this is exactly where our breeding work comes in.
Our vegetable breeding is focused on clear and practical breeding goals:
- Varieties with more flavour that clearly stand out from standard offerings
- More resistant and healthier varieties that thrive reliably even under difficult conditions
- Simplicity, for example through robust plants and uncomplicated cultivation
- Uniqueness and genuine added value compared to classic, well-known varieties
We basically work on three different groups of vegetable plants, each with its own focus and special features:
- OpenSky® outdoor vegetables (tomatoes, aubergines, chillies):
Here, we primarily search for and develop varieties that can be grown outdoors without protection and still deliver high, stable yields. Robustness, flavour and reliability are the main priorities. - EverVeg® perennial vegetables:
This breeding and assortment programme includes perennial, herbaceous vegetable species. While many gardeners are mainly familiar with rhubarb and asparagus, this group is actually extremely diverse. The Lubera Edibles assortment is continuously being expanded and supplemented by a broad, well-coordinated young plant programme. - Fruits of the Roots® root vegetables:
In this group, we offer young plants of root vegetables, which are usually cultivated annually. Here, too, we are pursuing new approaches in variety selection and plant quality.
We are proud to present some highlights from our latest breeding results below. They exemplify our commitment to rethinking vegetables: convincing in taste, practical for gardening and with real added value for ambitious hobby gardeners and professionals alike.
OpenSky® outdoor tomatoes from Lubera Edibles
Growing tomatoes in the garden, simply outside, without protection or covering. This dream becomes a reality with Lubera's OpenSky® tomatoes, which resist late blight well into autumn. As an addition to the existing outdoor stake tomatoes, Lubera Edibles is now introducing the OpenSky® Amberone stake tomato. Yellow-gold striped with amber-gold inlays. The small, slightly oval salad tomato combines a delicate spiciness with an unobtrusive sweetness. A real treat.

Even easier to grow are the OpenSky® Schlingel bush tomatoes: simply plant them in the bed, do not prune, let them grow until the bushes open up and release the red tomato balls that ripen from the bottom up. The series is complemented by the black-red variety Schlingel Filou, which adds a meaty umami flavour.

OpenSky® outdoor peppers & chillies
Amateur gardeners are used to growing peppers and chillies in greenhouses or plastic tunnels to ensure a good harvest and allow all the fruits to ripen. Lubera Edibles solves this problem with OpenSky® Speedy® peppers: they ripen early, even without protection, from mid-August onwards in the open field – and their stable growth means that supports are not necessary.
OpenSky® Speedy Rosina® produces flat, round, tomato-shaped fruits with a slight hint of heat, which gives this variety its character. Great for salads and also for cooking.

The ripening period for the OpenSky® Speedy Gonzales® pointed pepper variety begins even earlier, at the end of July. Here, the spiciness is even more pronounced (3 on a scale of 1 to 10), accompanied by a fresh acidity and yet underpinned by a hint of sweetness. This is also an exciting variety in terms of taste, which enhances any dish when freshly cut or lightly fried.
Both varieties stand out from the empty, sweet, plastic taste of the peppers offered in supermarkets.

Everkale® tree kale from Lubera Edibles
Tree kale is a perennial kale that grows like a tree and can be harvested for years. That is why we also call it ‘eternal kale’. Its winter hardiness has been significantly improved through years of selection, so that our latest tree kale varieties have a life expectancy of 3–8 years in the garden.
Unlike traditional cabbage varieties, Lubera's tree kale can be harvested whenever you want. Depending entirely on your needs, you can pick the flowers or leaves as you please. In late autumn, when frost sets in, the leaves become wonderfully sweet. If you don't try them, you only have yourself to blame...
Everkale® Running Blush tree kale is Lubera's highest-yielding tree kale. It grows strongly and expansively. The variety turns a beautiful red in winter.

Everkale® Greenwave tree kale, on the other hand, turns dark green at low temperatures. It grows broad and compact and has a ground-covering habit.

Anyone who still believes that kale is only for traditional cottage gardens is mistaken. The new tree kales are both ornamental and edible. They are exciting additions to modern gardens, requiring little care, attracting a lot of attention and allowing you to harvest as needed.
